Asian Americans in Washington State
One story of Washington state is a story of immigration, but it is not the simple tale of assimilation or acculturation. Immigrants brought pieces of culture from their native lands to Washington state, where they melded them with pieces taken from American culture. The documents that accompany this essay demonstrate how Chinese, Japanese, and Filipinos came to Washington, struggled against discrimination, labored to earn their living, and created distinctive cultures and identities. These documents chronicle, in a small way, how some Asian immigrants became Asian Americans.
The Center for the Study of the Pacific Northwest is dedicated to advancing scholarship on the Pacific Northwest, and the North American West more generally, with an emphasis on historical research. Located in the Department of History at the University of Washington, we support research, teaching, and public programs that promote and disseminate knowledge on the peoples and issues that have defined and shaped the Pacific Northwest.

Founded in 1979, CUAV works to build the power of LGBTQQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning) communities to transform violence and oppression. We support the healing and leadership of those impacted by abuse and mobilize our broader communities to replace cycles of trauma with cycles of safety and liberation. As part of the larger social justice movement, CUAV works to create truly safe communities where everyone can thrive.
National Center for Lesbian Rights
The National Center for Lesbian Rights is a national legal organization committed to advancing the civil and human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their families through litigation, public policy advocacy, and public education.
What We Do
NCLR is a non-profit, public interest law firm which litigates precedent-setting cases at the trial and appellate court levels; advocates for equitable public policies affecting the LGBT community; provides free legal assistance to LGBT people and their legal advocates; and conducts community education on LGBT legal issues.
Who We Serve
More than 5,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their families in all fifty states each year, including LGBT seniors, immigrants, athletes, and youth. And our impact litigation serves all LGBT people in the United States.

API Equality – Northern California
API Equality – Northern California works at the intersection of the Asian & Pacific Islander (API) and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) communities to empower community members, advance civil rights policies and protections, and promote respect and understanding for cultural and community diversity.
They have a youth internship program to train future leaders, they are focused on cultivating intergenerational conversations, and provide workshops + trainings about LGBTQ APIs in a variety of communities.
